Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra: 12th Summer Music Festival (2018)

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s 12th Summer Music Festival includes four symphony concerts at Artscape Opera House.

The season begins on Thursday 1 February with conductor Jochen Rieder leading the orchestra in Bernstein’s Candide Overture, Liszt’s Rhapsody Espagnole, and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4. Dmitry Masleev is the soloist in Saint-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

On Thursday 8 February, Rieder returns to lead the orchestra in Schubert’s Symphony No. 3 and the Schubert/Luciano Berio Rendering. Mūza Rubackytė is the soloist in the Schubert/Liszt Wanderer Fantasy.

On Thursday 15 February, Rieder leads the orchestra in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite and the world premiere of Antoni Schonken’s “to be : to know”. Christina Brabetz is the soloist in Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1,

On Sunday 18 February, Rieder leads the orchestra in the final concert, which includes Kodály’s Concerto for Orchestra and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9. Daniel Röhn is the soloist in Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 2.

More concerts not part of the formal season include the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert on Sunday 11 February, the Symphonic Shakespeare at Maynardville from 18 to 20 January, and the Viennese New Year this weekend. Conducted by Richard Cock and featuring soprano Siphamandla Yakupa and tenor Lukhanyo Moyake, the performances include waltzes, marches, and polkas by Johann Strauss father and son.
