January 2020: 5 stories in 2 publications

The new year brings exciting new things in this month’s newsletter!

With the holidays over, the Cape Town Travel Guide podcast featured the best co-working spaces in South Africa and the best ways to save money in Cape Town. The podcast also featured the best cocktail bars in Cape Town and the best summer events in the Western Cape.

Last year, I spent several newsletters talking about the trouble with social media platforms. If you missed out, here’s the summary. First, Facebook gets hit by another scandal (and then another one) so everyone tries to find success on Instagram, even if they have to change their faces or suffer social media burnout to do so. Then Instagram influencers get exposed for being fake (or else doing illegal things) so everyone tries to make it big on TikTok.

Can you hear me now?

So, what’s the best way to be heard in a world full of noise where everyone has ‘beef’? As I said then and will say now, I believe the answer is podcasting. That’s why I’ve created a new podcasting page with a free guide that shows you how to plan, start, and grow a successful podcast. Nowadays, this is the best way to share your voice with the world.

In the words of Seth Godin, whose best quotes of 2019 are this month’s recommended reading:

“Part of the scam is that the pyramid scheme of attention will somehow pay off for a lot of people. It won’t. It can’t. The math doesn’t hold up. Someone is going to win a lottery, but it probably won’t be us.”

Let’s play a different game.
