Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra: Spring Season 2015

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra presents four symphony concerts at Cape Town City Hall as part of its Spring Season for 2015.

The season begins on Thursday 22 October, with Perry So conducting the world premiere of Ndodana Breen’s Three Orchestral Songs on Poems by Ingrid Jonker, with Goitsemang Lehobye as soprano soloist. This concert also includes Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto (with Pallavi Mahidhara as soloist) and Prokofiev’s Seventh Symphony.

On Thursday 29 October, the symphony pays tribute to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, who was born 150 years ago. This concert includes his Finalandia, Violin Concerto, and Second Symphony.

Conductor Bernhard Gueller takes over on Thursday 5 November in a concert that begins with Haydn’s Symphony No. 83 and ends with the Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome by Respighi. In-between these two works is Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto, with Natalia Lavrova as soloist.

On Thursday 12 November, the season ends with a full concert that includes Dvořák’s Noon (Midday) Witch, cellist Maria Kliegel as the soloist in Bloch’s Rhapsodie Hébraïque and Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, and a performance of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. There’s also a curtain raiser by the youth orchestra.

But wait, there’s more! On Thursday 19 November, the orchestra performs Brahms’s Third Symphony, with Antonio Pompa-Baldi as the soloist in Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto.

And in Stellenbosch on Wednesday 4 December, the orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s Overture to Romeo and Juliet and Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, with Ammiel Bushakevitz as the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. What a perfect end to another great year!
