Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra: 10th International Summer Music Festival

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off 2016 with the 10th International Summer Music Festival.

On Thursday 4 February, Bernhard Gueller conducts the orchestra in a performance that begins with Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and ends with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6. Peter Donohoe is the soloist in the performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

On Thursday 11 February, Gueller returns as conductor in a concert that includes Tchaikovsky’s Polonaise from Eugene Onegin and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. Olga Kern is the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

On Thursday 18 February, Victor Yampolsky takes over as conductor in a performance that begins with Strauss’s Don Juan and ends with Brahms’s Symphony No. 4. Jack Liebeck is the soloist in Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

On Wednesday 24 February and Thursday 25 February, Yampolsky returns with François du Toit performing a cycle of all five Beethoven Piano Concertos. The season then concludes on Thursday 3 March with conductor Omri Hadari leading the orchestra in Bernstein’s Candide Overture, Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2, and pianist Aviram Reichert as soloist in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Other upcoming concerts include an evening of opera at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (on Sunday 28 February), a Symphony of Ghazal that celebrates the music of Jagjit Singh (on Saturday 6 February), and the Viennese New Year (on Sunday 17 January), which includes music by Strauss, Mozart, and dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet.
